Born and bred in Hull, Norman Walker began his working life at his father’s tool sales business. He was inspired to establish his machinery trading and hire company in Hull in 1930 because he was more interested in trading in larger machinery, rather than tools.
From tools to rollers to compressors
He started by hiring out road rollers; this grew to include excavators, dumpers and compressors. There were other competitors in this field at the time, but he worked hard to make it a success and became one of the first Broomwade compressor distributors in the 1950s. Back then, everything the company sold was manufactured in the UK.
In its early days, his customers included the local council, local manufacturing businesses and construction companies, all based in the East Riding of Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.
Expansion and new sites
Norman Walker started out at Pryme Street, Anlaby in Hull and in 1939 the business moved to Hawthorn Avenue.
The hire business was sold in in 1993 and in the same year the company moved to Clough Road, where it became 100% focused on compressor and pneumatic sales, service and installation.
The company moved to its current location at Melton Enterprise Park in 2010. From here it offers stock of new and used compressors with facilities for compressor maintenance repairs and overhauls. There’s also a sales counter for pneumatic equipment.
Today the business is run by a team of seven specialists. These include Norman Walker’s grandson, Simon Biggs:
Simon Biggs – compressor sales and service, started in 1978
Rick Stead – compressor engineer and pneumatic control panels, started 1989
Trevor Mason – compressor, blower and vacuum engineer, started 1990
Darren Atkins – pneumatic sales, started 1993
Paul Kendall – compressor engineer and pipework installations, started 1995
Nick Forth – compressor and sales engineer, started March 2021
